| Defining Malta through its Foreign Relations |
Malta has been known through the years as a financial center in the Mediterranean Sea. Its location makes it a strategic point for business and business relations across neighboring countries in the Mediterranean.
Malta has survived as country though its foreign relations. Tourism and a few Malta Hotels also flourished through Malta’s Foreign Relations. Whether you are a businessman or a fellow simply wising to mix business with pleasure, staying at one of the many Malta Hotels will be just for you. After gaining its independence in 1964, Malta has followed an international policy of working close and together with the United Kingdom and other countries which are members of NATO, and this created an economic boom and the growth of tourism and Malta Hotels.
This radically changed with the coming of the Malta Labor Party who won the elections and the government in June 1971, which was headed by Dom Mintoff. It was during this time that the government of Malta requested that the NATO sub-headquarters found in the country be closed and the Recreational visits to Malta by the U.S. Sixth fleet be immediately stopped. The steady increased of Malta Hotels also stopped at this time. Many Members of NATO including the United States increased their financial contributions to the organization to allow the British Forces in Malta until 1979. All member countries recognized the strategic location of the country as essential to the group’s protection. After 1979 and after the troops withdrew their forces from the area, the labor Government charted a course to be a neutral nation and became an active force behind the group of nations belonging to the Non-Aligned Movement. They wanted to let everyone enjoy the Mediterranean Region and the Malta Hotels. Malta as a nation state had always been active in the international organizations such as the United Nations, the Common Wealth, the council of Europe, the OSCE and other known international organizations.
In all these venues and forum, Malta made a stand for the peace, economic growth and development of the Mediterranean Region. They wanted tourism and business to flourish in the region which could lead to an increase in the number of Malta Hotels. In 1987, the foreign relations of the country changed again with the election of the Nationalist party. They continued their international policy for neutrality and non alignment but with the western concept as they desired close government relations with the United States and Europe.
They wanted to attract those states so as to increase trade relations between the countries and to increase their private investments in Malta. This is also their way to promote tourism and the comforts of the Malta Hotels. They withdrew from the Non-Aligned Movement letting the U.S. navy have regular liberty calls and this improved the tourism industry. The country became a full member of the European Union on May 1, 2004, which made it one of the ten members who joined that date. It improved their relations with the European Countries, increased trade and opened tourism opportunities.
Malta has also good relations with Libya and a treaty of security protocol was signed between the two countries. Malta and Tunisia also are discussing explorations on their joint continental shelves to find oil resources. The foreign relations of Malta have greatly helped the country in improving their economy, tourism and encouraging visitors to come and stay in the Malta Hotels. |
