What is the Cathedral of the Assumption?
The Cathedral of the Assumption is the principal church of the island of Gozo and the seat of its bishop. A fine example of Maltese Baroque, it was designed by the architect Lorenzo Gafà, who also built St Paul's Cathedral in Mdina.
Where is the Cathedral of the Assumption?
The cathedral stands within the Cittadella, the fortified citadel that crowns Victoria, the capital of Gozo. It dominates the small square at the heart of the old town walls.
History of the Cathedral of the Assumption
The cathedral was built between 1697 and 1711 on the site of earlier churches, themselves thought to stand where a Roman temple once stood. Lorenzo Gafà designed an elegant Baroque building, but funds for the planned masonry dome ran short. Rather than leave the church unfinished, the artist Antonio Manuele was commissioned to paint the interior of the flat ceiling as an illusionistic dome, complete with perspective architecture. The effect, seen from the nave, is remarkably convincing.
