About Birkirkara
Birkirkara — central town: St Helen's Basilica, old railway station and living
Birkirkara (B'Kara) is one of the most populous towns in Malta, in the Northern Harbour District at the centre of the island. It is known for the Baroque Basilica of St Helen and for the old Birkirkara railway station, a relic of the former Malta Railway.
Where is Birkirkara?
Birkirkara lies at the centre of Malta, in the Northern Harbour District, surrounded by Msida, Santa Venera, Qormi, Balzan, Lija, Iklin and San Ġwann. It is part of the continuous central conurbation and is one of the busiest road and bus hubs on the island.
History of Birkirkara
Birkirkara is one of Malta's oldest inland towns, historically an important agricultural and population centre. The Baroque Basilica of St Helen is its principal landmark and one of the largest churches on the island. Birkirkara was a key stop on the Malta Railway, which operated between Valletta and Mdina/Mtarfa from 1883 until 1931; the old Birkirkara railway station survives and the surrounding area has been restored as a station garden and monument to the line.
What to see in Birkirkara
Basilica of St Helen — a large Baroque basilica and the town's main landmark. Old Birkirkara Railway Station — a preserved station of the former Malta Railway (1883–1931), with a garden and a restored locomotive display. Historic town core — old streets and chapels around the parish churches.
Transport in Birkirkara
Birkirkara is a major node on the Malta Public Transport network, with many routes passing through it on central corridors. There is no longer a railway — the Malta Railway closed in 1931 — and no ferry. Local movement is by bus or car; traffic on the central routes can be heavy.
Living in Birkirkara
Birkirkara is a large, central, densely populated town with extensive services, schools and shops, and strong bus connectivity. Assessments of cost of living, traffic and housing should be based on current local data rather than general impressions.
