About Sliema
Sliema — coastal town: seafront, shopping, transport and living
Sliema is a coastal town in the Northern Harbour District of Malta, on the peninsula north-west of Valletta across Marsamxett Harbour. It is one of Malta's main residential, commercial and shopping centres, known for its seafront promenade, rocky beaches and ferry connection to the capital.
Where is Sliema?
Sliema lies on the north-eastern coast of Malta, on a peninsula facing Valletta across Marsamxett Harbour, within the Northern Harbour District. It is bordered by Gżira and Ta' Xbiex along the harbour, and merges into St Julian's to the north along the coast. The Tigné Point peninsula marks its eastern tip.
History of Sliema
Sliema developed in the 19th century from a small coastal area into a fashionable summer-residence and resort town as wealthier Maltese built villas along the coast. Fort Tigné, built by the Order of St John at the end of the 18th century to guard the entrance to Marsamxett Harbour, stands at Tigné Point, which has since been redeveloped into a modern residential and retail district. Through the 20th century Sliema grew into a year-round commercial and residential hub.
What to see in Sliema
The seafront promenade — a long coastal walk popular for strolling, running and sea views towards Valletta. Tigné Point & Fort Tigné — a historic fort alongside a modern development with the shopping centre at The Point. Rocky beaches and lidos — Sliema's coast is rocky rather than sandy, with swimming off flat rocks and seasonal lidos. The Ferries area — the transport and commercial node where the Valletta ferry docks.
Transport in Sliema
Sliema is well connected by bus to Valletta, St Julian's and the rest of the island via Malta Public Transport. The Valletta Ferry runs frequently between Sliema and the capital, offering a fast scenic crossing of Marsamxett Harbour that is often quicker than the bus. Ride-hailing services operate widely. Parking can be difficult given the town's density.
Living in Sliema
Sliema is a central, walkable town with extensive shops, restaurants, cafés and services, and strong transport links. It is one of Malta's most sought-after residential areas, which is reflected in property and rental levels; cost assessments should be based on current market data. Housing is dominated by apartments, many with sea views.
