About Victoria
Victoria (Rabat) — Gozo
Victoria, still known to Gozitans as Rabat, is the capital and beating heart of Gozo. Crowned by the fortified Cittadella and gathered around the lively square of It-Tokk, it is the island's hub for shopping, administration, festivals and transport, and the natural base for exploring Gozo.
Where is Victoria?
Victoria sits in the centre of Gozo, on and around a hill that has been settled since antiquity. Its central position makes it the meeting point of the island's roads and bus routes, within easy reach of every village and the Mġarr ferry to Malta.
History of Victoria
The hilltop has been a place of refuge since Bronze Age and Punic-Roman times, and the Cittadella served for centuries as the island's last stronghold against raiders. For long periods Gozitans were required to spend the night inside its walls for safety. Below the citadel, the medieval suburb of Rabat grew into the town that is now Victoria, with the great Cathedral of the Assumption rising within the walls and the Basilica of St George at the heart of the town below.
What to see in Victoria
The Cittadella, with its bastion walks and the Cathedral of the Assumption and its famous painted "dome". It-Tokk (Independence Square) and the daily market. The Basilica of St George in the old town. Museums within the Cittadella covering Gozo's archaeology, folklore and nature. The historic Astra and Aurora opera houses, home to Gozo's famous rival band clubs.
Transport in Victoria
Victoria is the hub of Gozo's bus network, with routes radiating out to every corner of the island. The Mġarr ferry terminal, linking Gozo with Ċirkewwa on Malta, is a short ride away. The compact centre is best explored on foot.
Living in Victoria
As the capital, Victoria offers the fullest range of services on Gozo — shops, banks, schools, the general hospital, government offices and cultural venues. It combines small-town life with the amenities of an island capital, and it comes alive during the summer festa season and the rivalry of its band clubs.
