About Xewkija
Xewkija — Gozo
Xewkija, the first village in Gozo to be made a parish in its own right, is known above all for its astonishing church: the Rotunda of St John the Baptist, whose vast dome rises over the centre of the island and can be seen from almost everywhere on Gozo.
Where is Xewkija?
Xewkija lies just south-east of Victoria, on the road towards the Mġarr ferry. Its great domed church makes it one of the most recognisable points on the Gozo skyline.
History of Xewkija
Xewkija was raised to parish status in the 17th century, the first Gozitan village to gain that distinction. Its older Baroque church eventually proved too small for the growing population, and from the mid-20th century the villagers built the immense new Rotunda around it, largely by their own labour and donations — a remarkable feat of community devotion. Parts of the old church were preserved as a museum.
What to see in Xewkija
The Rotunda of St John the Baptist and its enormous dome. The viewing gallery in the dome, reached by lift, with panoramic views over Gozo. The museum of carved stone and statuary preserved from the old church. The quiet village square and surrounding countryside.
