Attard — Three Villages: San Anton Palace and Gardens, living
Attard is a town in the Western District of Malta and one of the Three Villages with Balzan and Lija. It is known for San Anton Palace and Gardens, the official residence of the President of Malta, and a Renaissance parish church dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady.
Where is Attard?
Attard lies in central Malta, west of Birkirkara and the harbour area, next to Balzan, Lija, Mdina/Rabat and Żebbuġ. It belongs to the Western District and, with Balzan and Lija, forms the Three Villages.
History of Attard
Attard is one of the old central villages, with its parish established in the early 17th century. Its parish church of the Assumption, designed by the Maltese architect Tommaso Dingli and completed in the 1610s–1620s, is regarded as one of the finest Renaissance churches in Malta. San Anton Palace was built in the 17th century as a country residence of a Grand Master and later became the residence of the President of Malta, with its gardens open to the public.
