Qrendi — temple village: Ħaġar Qim, Mnajdra, Maqluba and living
Qrendi is a village in the South Eastern District of Malta, near Żurrieq and the southern coast. It is closely associated with the Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra megalithic temples on the nearby coast, the Maqluba sinkhole and a parish dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady.
Where is Qrendi?
Qrendi lies in the south of Malta, inland of the south-western coast, next to Żurrieq, Mqabba and Siġġiewi. It belongs to the South Eastern District. The Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra temples stand on the coast within its territory.
History of Qrendi
The Qrendi area has been inhabited since prehistory: the Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra temple complexes date from roughly the 4th–3rd millennium BC and are among the oldest free-standing stone structures in the world, inscribed by UNESCO as part of the Megalithic Temples of Malta. The village itself grew as a rural settlement, with its parish of the Assumption and several towers and chapels, including the Cavalier Tower (Torri ta' Sciutu).
