About Saint Paul's Bay
St Paul's Bay — northern resort area: bays, attractions, transport and living
St Paul's Bay (San Pawl il-Baħar) is a town in the Northern District of Malta that includes the resort areas of Buġibba and Qawra. It is associated with the tradition of St Paul's shipwreck and is one of Malta's main tourism and residential zones in the north.
Where is St Paul's Bay?
St Paul's Bay is in the north of the main island of Malta, in the Northern District, around the bay of the same name. The wider locality includes the resort areas of Buġibba and Qawra on the Qawra peninsula and Xemxija on the bay's western side. It borders Melliħa to the north and the central towns to the south.
History of St Paul's Bay
The area is linked by tradition to the shipwreck of St Paul on Malta, described in the Acts of the Apostles and associated with the St Paul's Islands at the mouth of the bay. The Order of St John built coastal defences here, including the Wignacourt Tower, one of the oldest surviving watchtowers in Malta. Buġibba also contains the remains of a small prehistoric temple. The bay developed strongly as a tourist and residential area through the 20th century.
What to see in St Paul's Bay
St Paul's Islands — small islands at the mouth of the bay associated with the shipwreck tradition. Wignacourt Tower — an early 17th-century coastal watchtower built by the Order of St John. Malta National Aquarium — a public aquarium on the Qawra coast. Buġibba Temple — prehistoric temple remains within the resort area. The coastal promenade — running along Buġibba and Qawra, with rocky swimming areas and lidos.
Transport in St Paul's Bay
St Paul's Bay, Buġibba and Qawra are served by buses connecting to Melliħa, the central towns and Valletta via Malta Public Transport, including direct routes from the area to the airport and the harbour towns. The locality is a major hub for tourist accommodation in the north.
Living in St Paul's Bay
St Paul's Bay is a large, mixed locality with extensive tourist accommodation, residential apartments and services, busiest in the resort areas of Buġibba and Qawra. It is more spread out than the harbour towns and popular for both holidays and longer-term residence. Cost and housing assessments should be based on current market data.
