About Santa Lucija
Santa Luċija — garden town: planned suburb, Chinese Garden and living
Santa Luċija is a planned residential town in the Southern Harbour District of Malta, built in the 1960s as a garden suburb. It is known for its tree-lined layout and the Chinese Garden of Serenity, a landscaped garden gifted by China.
Where is Santa Luċija?
Santa Luċija lies in the south-central part of Malta, between Paola, Tarxien, Żejtun, Luqa and Gudja. It belongs to the Southern Harbour District. It is one of the smaller localities and is surrounded by neighbouring towns of the harbour area.
History of Santa Luċija
Santa Luċija was developed from the early 1960s as one of Malta's first purpose-planned residential towns, designed with gardens, wide streets and low-rise housing. It became a separate parish and locality. The Chinese Garden of Serenity (Ġnien is-Serenità), a classical Chinese landscaped garden gifted by the People's Republic of China, was opened in the town and is one of its distinctive features.
